Summary:

The Head Coach must demonstrate strong leadership in player and staff development, integrity, sportsmanship and character development. Coach should possess strong communication and organizational skills. They must demonstrate exceptional knowledge of the skills and strategies of their sport as it pertains to the policies of New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA).  Coach will supervise high school assistant coaches, mid school coaches and student-athletes. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 
  • Ensure all coaches in the program are certified, licensed and cleared by CCSD Human Resources department
  • Ensures that team rules and regulations regarding conduct and eligibility of the athletes are clearly communicated and followed
  • Plan, organize, advertise, and conduct tryouts for the program
  • Inform school athletic director and participants of the final selections
  • Maintain the integrity of the selection process
  • Consult with the school athletic director and provide information regarding any off-season training programs (including scheduling dates for summer camps, coaches clinic schedule), rules for season (two-a-day practices, scrimmages, try-out schedule criteria, etc.)
  • Works with the school athletic director in preparing practice and game or competition schedules
  • Submit athletic rosters to the school athletic director one week before the first game or competition
  • Maintain necessary records and completes required paperwork in a timely manner
  • Ensure that all athletes have valid sports physical examinations before they are allowed to practice
  • Ensure that proper forms (insurance, attendance, medical) are obtained and current and that all student-athletes are academically eligible
  • Make sure all athletes have baseline Impact Tests prior to first scrimmage
  • Work directly with school certified athletic trainer in reporting injuries
  • Ensure that certified coach is present at all team practices and games
  • Head coach will travel with student-athletes on the team bus both to and from competitions
  • Enforces discipline policies
  • Hold informational parent meetings at the beginning of each season for all levels
  • Adhere to all financial policies of CCSD in regard to collection and disbursement of money, expenses and receipts
  • Make recommendations regarding the purchase of uniforms, equipment and supplies
  • Arrange and schedule bus transportation with school athletic director for athletic participants
  • Arrange hotel room reservations for all overnight events except State competitions
  • Foster among student-athletes, coaches and spectators an appreciation of the values of athletics, a desire to perform at the highest levels, an attitude of good sportsmanship and a sense of pride in self, team school, family and community
  • Assume a major role in the development of our youth as future leaders.
  • Positive communication strategies, organizational skills and safety awareness
  • Emphasis on the importance of academic excellence and assist in monitoring and maintaining high academic standards for members of the program
  • Assist team members with applications to post high school programs, college, vocational training or military
  • Direct training, conditioning and performance of the program
  • Supervise the assistant coaches in their efforts with teams
  • Demonstrate current knowledge of sports specific strength and conditioning programs
  • Execute programs during the off-season within the parameters of NMAA regulations
  • Promote the program within the school and community
  • Support district and school efforts to keep CCSD safe and secure
  • Complete and comply with all required trainings annually
  • Adhere to NM Code of Ethical Responsibility of the Education Profession (NMAC 6.60.9.8)
  • Other duties as assigned, reasonably related to the scope of the position

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 
  • BA degree
  • Valid New Mexico Teaching License 
  • Coaching certification
  • Previous high school coaching experience

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 
  • Knowledge of Dine language, culture, and history preferred
  • Good communication skills and customer service skills
  • Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program
  • Knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport
  • Current CPR and first aid certification

 

Physical/Job Requirements:

 

Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying up to 50 pounds, climbing, bending, reaching, kneeling, driving a vehicle, traveling long distances, writing, typing, word processing, reading, researching information, and effective communication skills.

 

Safety and Health:

 
  • Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions
  • Completed and cleared background check
  • Pass drug test if required for position
  • Knowledge and compliance with district and school Safety Plans

 

Equipment/Material Handled:

 
  • Multimedia equipment, including current technology
  • Equipment/materials relevant to the job responsibilities
  • Valid driver license and insurable by district if necessary

    • Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature and air quality

    • Must complete applications and assignments within the timeframes allowed
    • Extended work hours, on occasion
